Local Business Spotlight: The Stilt House & Toast

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

Toast is the grooviest brunch spot in Milwaukee featuring menu items like Hippie Hash and Far Out Omelets. Their retro 60s and 70s theme reaches beyond their menu to the atmosphere of the restaurant with old album covers like Willie Nelson and Neil Diamond scattered about the vibrant orange walls and a friendly staff that's decked out in psychedelic tie-dye tees.

Whether you’re craving something sweet like their Maple Bacon Pull Apart Bread or savory like the smoky poblano on the Huevos Rancheros, Toast has something for everyone. Although their breakfast items are to die for, they also serve a plethora of lunch options like their customizable tacos and burgers all served with your choice of potatoes.

Toast also doesn't fall short on drinks. With mimosa flights and several craft cocktails, diners can indulge in a little day drinking or get an energy boost with their Kona coffee and Rishi tea options. Did we mention they have bottomless mimosas on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4pm?

The Stilt House’s name comes from a funny story of determination and innovative thinking. At the turn of the 20th century, Nick Schuh, the owner of the Nick Schuh Tavern, wanted to add a second story to the building, but after the city cut his plans short, Schuh knew he had to get creative. He complied with their demands and didn’t build a second story, but instead literally raised the ground level on stilts and built a new first floor right under the original. Over a century later, The Stilt House pays homage to Schuh’s creativity with its name.

Featuring 31 rotating draft lines with a range of IPAs, Sours, Stouts, Barrel Aged and other rare gems, any beer connoisseur will be pleased with the Stilt House’s selection. But if beer isn’t your thing, they boast of having one of the best Old Fashioneds in the state.

Their menu encourages sharing between friends by trying out a little bit of this and a little of that. Although they serve simple dishes, don’t be fooled into thinking the flavor is simple too. The Stilt House is known for taking a classic dish and elevating it with better ingredients. Take their Adult Grilled Cheese for an example: this is no Kraft single sandwiched between a couple of pieces of white bread. Instead it’s made on herbed focaccia bread, and decked out with bacon, tomatoes, smoked gouda, cheddar, pepper jack, and American cheeses.

Toast and The Stilt House are Milwaukee staples that we are proud to feature on our Foodie Flight passports this year!
